Wine blogger Brian Pasch is the first to experience and review the 2009 Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz, when he visited the Mollydooker winery this April to exclusively taste the entire 2009 Mollydooker portfolio.

Many winemakers have hailed this year’s growing season as ‘excellent’, and Pasch’s reviews echo those sentiments.

Part of what makes Mollydooker Wines so unique is that their portfolio can vary based on the quality of fruit harvested.  The vineyard fruit is scored based on its Marquis Fruit Weight™ score.  For example, the Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz is only produced from vineyards that have a 75% Fruit Weight score.

The 2009 Blue Eyed Boy is 100% Shiraz from the Mollydooker Home Block Vineyard and Langhorne Creek Vineyards.  “This is the best Blue Eyed Boy (BEB) I have ever tasted,” raved Pasch in his review on Corkd.com, a comprehensive source of wine news. “The purity of this wine was amazing. The 2006 vintage was awarded 96 points by The Wine Advocate and 92 points by Wine Spectator.

Sparky Marquis of Mollydooker Wines is talking about the 2009 vintage as being as good as 2000, which is the best he has seen so far.

The viticulture team, who heroically check every vineyard block twice a week, braving heat, snakes and growers shooting at birds; have all been talking up ‘their’ blocks, claiming gradings of either ‘Awesome’ or ‘Oh my God’.  And they have been proved right. The fruit, as it has come in, has been phenomenal!

Slowly developing in the open fermenters, it reminded me of blackcurrant jam, so tempting you almost wanted to be in the fermenter with it! Rich, thick, silky, voluputuous, and yet still vibrant and fresh.

This vintage is looking very special indeed.
